Research Description:
We analyze and compare the role of intercellular signaling pathways in the regulation of fundamental processes of animal development, in different model animals, in order to establish their biological functions and to determine the conserved and divergent aspects of molecular mechanisms of their activities.

Our goals are (1) to identify new aspects of their activation and regulation patterns, as well as their target genes, (2) to distinguish the biological processes they control during development, (3) to understand how these signaling pathways have evolved in metazoans, and (4) to establish their contribution to the establishment of the great morphological diversity observed among animals, focusing in particular on the group of deuterostomic animals which includes, in particular, the man. To achieve these goals, we are investigating the Wnt and retinoic acid signaling pathways, using mainly three alternative animal models: the sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus), the amphioxus (Branchiostoma lanceolatum), and the lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis).
